Unhappy Steering column

i seem to have an issue with my steering column. twice my car has died while driving. i`m almost positive the problem is a loose or pinched wire. cant resolve it and it`s really starting to piss me off. maybe i need to get a new column outa a later model stang

Take your plastic trim off and get to the wired part of the key switch I think it held together by clips or something like that mine started to seperate one time and my cay would die also. I pushed it back together fixed the clip issue and it has been fine ever since.

yeah that was the issue before. the plastic switch was seperating from the aluminum block. i tightened it back up with channel locks solving the problem.....so i thought. it died again and the switch is still together. idfk. ive checked out all the wires and cant find the problem

Bummer.... Hope you get it sorted out. I've got a minor electrical glitch & no clue where to start or even look. When I turn on the blinkers, left or right turn; the tack "blips" left about 1K rpm. The speedo has an erratic "jerking" motion, back & forth, on rare ocassion when I'm going 60-70mph only. Electrical gremlin's can be a bitch IMHO....

yours is just the factory tach, pretty common with our cars, the blinker problem could be the mulitposistion switch, mine is out and the blinkers wont work properly but flashers do, it doesnt bother me enough to fix it yet, and Matt if you wanna swing by one of these weekend i'll help you hunt that electrical problem down

Interesting... You mean that when you initially hit the turn signals that it normal for the tach to "jump" or are you saying that it's a common problem & replacing the tach with a know good unit would fix the issue?

My blinkers & flashers work just fine; no erratic or changing flashing speed.... The multi-position switch in basically integrated into the turn signal stalk assembly, right?

it could be either, i know its pretty common for the tachs to go bad or start to read up to 1k rpms off at times and any nearby electrical signal can interfere with them

as far as the multi-posistion switch it could be the switch is starting to short and send out a higher voltage signal than normal and that my be affecting your tach as well, but yes they are basically integrated into each other, IIRC there was a thread on the corral about testing and calibrating the stock tach, IMO its easier to just go with a florida 5.0 cluster and call it a day

Thanks for the info.... I felt that it had to do with somekind of "electrical interference" or "bleeding" type issue & it could possibly due too the instrument cluster voltage regulator having problems.
I happened to look at that Corral tach calibration thread recently... Small world, eh?
I'll have to look into that "Florida 5.0 cluster" setup when I have some time.... A new cluster wouldn't be out of the question for me.....
